You may have heard about the "Subway Superman" who jumped onto the tracks to help a man who had suffered a seizure as a train was arriving and fell right in front of it. What I hadn't heard is that he was with his two young daughters at the time and asked some bystanders to keep an eye on them and get them out of sight of the incident. Also, he had already helped the gentleman once.
So, quick checklist:
1. Father, dropping off his kids at their mother's house to go to his construction job.
2. Sees a stranger acting funny and offers assistance (in fact, uses a pen to dislodge the victims tongue from his throat).
3. Waits with victim until he's regained composure and walks off on his own.
4. Keeps an eye on victim because he still looked shaky.
5. Can't locate victim, secures daughters with bystanders and goes to tracks to help victim.
6. Jumps down in front of a MOVING TRAIN and tries to drag the guy up to the platform.
7. Realizing he can't get it done in time, he lays on top of the victim and hugs him tight as the train is going over his head with only an inch or so to spare - the seizures may not be done yet.
8. Calms the victim by talking to him as the train stops.
9. Calls up to tell his daughters he's not dead.

When this world looks ugly, we're reminded that there is love here, and that love it the most beautiful thing that we have.
What I'm beginning to realize is that the tendency to simply fight/go to war/exact vengeance is an easy tendency to follow. There might be some instant gratification, in fact. To be altruistic or selfless is much more difficult and usually causes us to sacrifice rather than to gain in the short term. It's a bit of a jump to understand what the long term effect of each will be.
Shit, I'm talking like Yoda. Easy the dark side is.
